LMS Academic Challenge Team State Champs!

Congratulations to the Latta Middle School Academic Challenge Team for their impressive performance at the Academic Challenge State Tournament on Friday, March 17, 2023. During the semi-final round of the State Tournament, Latta Middle School competed against Edgewood Middle School, which they defeated with a close score of 35 to 33. Then, the team went on to compete in the final round against Lewisville Middle School. The Latta Vikings dominated the match with a final score of 49 to 20, crowning them the 2022-2023 Division II State Champions. For the entire day, the Vikings earned 84 points, meaning they answered 84 questions correctly!

Overall, the Latta Vikings led an outstanding five-month season, winning five out of six regular season matches. With the points they accumulated in these matches (259) and during the Regional Tournament (179), and the State Tournament (84), the LMS Academic Challenge Team has earned a total of 522 points this season! Also, Captain Avery Kirby and Captain George Roberts were named the season's All-Star players for their incredible leadership and for the remarkable amount of points they acquired for the team. We are proud to close the season with the title of State Champions!

Miss Viking Pageant 2023

Ms Viking Contestants Latta High School recently held its annual Miss Viking pageant at the Ellis Performing Arts Center. Sixteen young ladies in grades ninth through twelfth took part in the pageant directed by Jodie Peele Branham. The contestants competed in three categories; Interview, Valentine's Day wear, and Evening Gown wear. Special entertainment was provided by Miss Viking 2018, Lea Foster Khalil, who also assisted with crowning and the pageant was emceed by Ms. Branham. Crowning took place in each grade level with an overall crowning of Miss Viking as well as a contestant voted crowning of Miss Sweetheart.

Miss Kate Gasque was crowned Miss Freshman and first runner-up was Miss Lauryn Brumbles; Miss Katelyn Johnson was crowned Miss Sophomore and first runner-up was Miss Brooke Gasque; Miss Tori Watson was crowned Miss Junior and first runner-up was Miss Briley Bryson; Miss Sarah Bracey was crowned Miss Senior and first runner-up was Miss Hannah Coleman.

Miss Sweetheart, voted on by all the contestants, was given to Miss Janie Nolan who was also crowned the Overall Miss Viking 2023. Janie is a sophomore at Latta High School. She is the daughter of Mr. Tommy and Donna Nolan of Marion and the granddaughter of Mr. Don and Joyce Nicholson of Pawleys Island and Ms. Anna Nolan of Marion. She is an active member of Latta High School's FCA, LHS' student body government, the LHS Honor Choir, and the LHS Varsity cheer squad. In the future, she plans to attend Clemson University and pursue a degree in Sports Communication in hopes of one day becoming a sports broadcaster for a major sporting television network.

Ms. Branham would like to publicly thank Mrs. Nan Carmichael, administrator for LHS, Mrs. Erika Roberts, tech booth assistant, Mrs. Eleanor Powers, director of the Ellis Performing Arts Center, the judges, and the Latta community for coming and supporting the contestants. Thank you also to Petals & Stems Florist for providing the flowers and Mrs. Christie Fisher Hunt for the making of the sashes.
